There is something wonderfully strange about science fiction.

Give it a spaceship, a robot, a strange planet, or a machine that definitely should not have been built, and somehow we are interested immediately. Maybe even very interested. We want to know where the spaceship is going, what the robot wants, and why that glowing button has a giant warning sign next to it.

 

But why?

What made science fiction so cool in the first place?

The answer goes deeper than spaceships and laser guns. Science fiction became special because it took one of the oldest human habits—wondering what if?—and connected it to science, technology, society, and the future.

It made the impossible feel almost possible.

The Magic of “What If?”

Fantasy can give us a wizard, a magic spell, and a perfectly reasonable explanation of “because magic.”

Science fiction tends to make a different move.
