People have been dreaming of time travel for at least 125 years. HG Wells wrote his seminal novel The Time Machine in 1895, and physicists and philosophers have been serious treatises on the subject for nearly a century.
What really got the scientific exploration of time travel going was the notion of time as a dimension that emerged in the last few years of the 19th century. We can move through space without any problems - so why not also through time?
“You can go wherever you want in the room. So maybe you can go wherever you want in time, ”says Nikk Effingham, a philosopher at the University of Birmingham in Great Britain. "From there it's just a short leap to time machines."

]]>The Grandfather Paradox is the most common example used to illustrate causality problems in time travel. The scenario is as follows:
Someone who has the opportunity to travel back in time travels back in time to before his father was conceived and kills his grandfather there. Another assumption is the so-called self-consistent universe: it is possible to travel in time, but not to produce causality violations in the process; any attempt to do so is guaranteed to fail. For example, the time traveler might simply not find his pistol, or he makes a mistake in programming the time machine and ends up somewhere completely different (or in a different time) and therefore cannot find his grandfather, or he confuses someone else with his grandfather (and now I know who committed the puzzling unsolved murder his grandfather once told him about), or he misses, or the pistol jams, or ... This represents a restriction on the often invoked human free will - the implementation of human will (for example also the intention to fly on one's own initiative) can be impaired by external circumstances (for example laws of nature).
The problem, however, is that if time travel is possible, then causal paradoxes could arise. A classic example is the grandfather paradox: if a time traveler kills his grandfather in the past before he fathered his father, he himself should never be born. The time traveler therefore did not even exist in his time and could not travel back either. Classical physics forbids such causal paradoxes.
The self-consistent universe can also be justified with quantum mechanics: In quantum mechanics, the state of the system is described by the quantum mechanical wave function. This has the special property that when two waves that have taken different paths are superimposed (normally, e.g., in the double-slit experiment, the left and right slit; in a time, loop, on the other hand, the part coming directly from the past and the part running through the time loop), these can annihilate each other, so that an event that can be reached in itself is no longer possible. It stands to reason that paradoxical strand of events would extinguish one another.

If one believes lectures and interviews by representatives of the digital economy, another digital turning point could be imminent: "Blockchain technology will turn the financial sector upside down like the electric drive will turn the car industry upside down," believes Philipp Sandner, head of the Blockchain Center at the School of Finance Management.
The blockchain fever has broken out everywhere. It is discussed at industry conferences, corporate boards attend blockchain seminars, and medium-sized companies are working on pilot projects. And it affects the entire economy. From insurance to tourism groups to the shipping of bananas: If you believe the apologists for the new technology, the blockchain could turn our world upside down, just like the Internet recently.
The blockchain is a database that consists of a “chain” of data blocks.
This chain is constantly being expanded to include new blocks in which transactions are stored. The principle can be compared to an accountant who writes all transfers in a network on a piece of paper every day and staples it in a large folder in the evening. It does not matter which information is stored in the data blocks - bitcoins, title deeds, freight books. With the blockchain, a reconciliation mechanism takes on the role of the accountant. With its help, all participants decide which data blocks are sorted out as invalid and which are accepted as valid. How exactly agreement is reached among the participants differs depending on the blockchain application. With Bitcoin, for example, those who have the greatest computing power and thus keep the database running make the decisions.
If the participants have checked and accepted a new data block, it is added to the chain. So it gets longer and longer over time.
If new blocks are attached to the blockchain, all participants receive a copy of the updated blockchain. The highlight: Since the database is growing continuously, it records all transactions since the start of the blockchain network.
The real highlight: Since there are as many copies as users, the information is stored in the blockchain on thousands of computers around the globe. This makes them practically forgery-proof compared to conventional central databases. A version could be easily manipulated. However, since there are thousands of copies of the unadulterated blockchain, discrepancies can be detected by a simple comparison and forgeries can be sorted out. According to this logic, virtual money produced by users replaces the state coin press and bank transfer. Digital proof of ownership of contracts, houses and containers make notaries, land registry offices and shipping documents superfluous (the selected application examples are explained below). Blockchain technology accelerates world trade, as senders, recipients, logisticians and customs authorities have identical data for the first time. Dune, Frank Herbert's six-book, award-winning sci-fi series brought to the big screen by David Lynch at first; this time it is being adapted for the cinema by Denis Villeneuve. The next work of Denis Villeneuve, who is known in the cinema world with films such as Prisoner, Enemy, Sicario and Arrival, and who recently directed Blade Runner 2049. From viewers to readers, including the director himself, there is a widely shared opinion: the screen adaptation of Frank Herbert's long-running novel Dune is a work of uneven inspiration at best, sometimes dazzling, often awkward. The Dune Cycle remains for us an unforgettable reading experience that its film adaptation allows us to relive. Even though we would subscribe to the principle that an adaptation must have a value, decontextualized, we readily recognize that the pleasure taken in this film depends on prior knowledge of the story and the characters. This makes us able to fill in the gaps in the scenario, to relativize the betrayals. We come then to consider Dune, the film, as the illustration of a monument of literature, with all that that entails of simplification. And we are just delighted to see the Duncan Idaho, Gurney Halleck, Feyd-Rautha or Reverend Mother come alive before our eyes, and to hear them utter Herbert's strange and familiar lexical inventions.
Dune, the first book in a six-book science fiction series, was written by Frank Herbert in 1965. One of the best science fiction novels of the 20th century, Dune won the Hugo Award for Best Novel and the Nebula Award for Best Novel. ]]>Although transhumanism is not a completely homogeneous current, transhumans and transhumanists worldwide are generally united by the pursuit of a long, healthy and more livable life. And the goal of positive development for people and society, especially (but not only) through science and technology.
The question “what is transhumanism” needs a far broader answer. Transhumanism is often seen as a logical continuation of humanism in the context of current progress and the current page development.
When it comes to the question “What is Transhumanism?” The first thing to say clearly is that there is no such thing as one transhumanism. As in most other currents of thought, in transhumanism there are different opinions and a range of interpretations and points of view. Before I start to collect common topics like most other attempts at definition, it might work better if I approach some of the goals or focused content of many transhumanists backwards:
Transhumanism is based on many modern humanistic ideals (such as rational reason or a comprehensive education) as well as the recognition and respectful appreciation of all life - be it human or non-human. In addition, it considers scientific, technological but also social progress as well as a happy one, self-determined and fulfilled life in health, prosperity and freedom, in addition in harmony with nature, for worth striving for; without special exceptions and without constraints, without arbitrarily drawn boundaries or ideological restrictions.
In the face of an ever faster and more profoundly changing human environment, transhumanism recognizes the radical and far-reaching changes in the nature and possibilities of life through research, science and technology as well as the importance and opportunities of a globally networked, heterogeneous world community. It is therefore committed to researching current and expected future developments as well as their effects rationally and systematically and considering them in future planning so that their possibilities can be used meaningfully for society and responsible decisions can be made with foresight. Transhumanism is also, and precisely for that reason, defined by a diverse, social and liberal community that is both the basis and the goal of empowerment and development.
Taking into account possible risks and ethical aspects, transhumanism, in the sense of an “obligation to progress”, advocates expanding the limits of human possibilities with new technological processes and scientific knowledge. This should enable every person in the future to individually improve their quality of life as well as to determine their physical and mental abilities themselves and to be able to overcome basic human limitations.
Most transhumanists use values such as equality, freedom and equal opportunities as such a fundamental and given basis that they are seldom formulated explicitly. Very few strive for a world in which a few own everything and the rest of the people have to live as quasi-slaves. Even if this is a gladly made accusation of many critics.
On the contrary, some of the most influential proponents or supporters of transhumanism devote their life's work to helping so many people improve their lives as quickly and as comprehensively as possible. For example, many people are working to extend the natural lifespan, as nobody on earth would like to watch the death of relatives or their own helplessly. Some are working on the full range of current problems and their quick resolution. Others are working to make mankind the first known interstellar species ,and still others use all their knowledge and abilities to enable everyone to realize such projects themselves .
The term “technological singularity” is often used in connection with transhumanism. Here, however, the opinions of many transhuman minds differ greatly. Opinions on the technological singularity begin with “The goal that we have to achieve as quickly as possible, at all costs ". They range from “A goal that needs to be achieved, but in well-considered and possibly regulated channels ” to “ It is likely that it will occur in the next few decades, and because of the positive opportunities resulting from it, we should have this opportunity perceive accordingly ".
In addition, even the exact content of this technological singularity is often debated. Most transhumanists understand this as an event in which technology develops itself faster than the (unchanged) person can still follow it, let alone understand it. What futuristic science fiction films can do is to draw a picture of how it could develop if society and people do not pay attention to one another. This is where the great opportunity lies at the same time: danger recognized, danger averted. If the world and people deal with what could come and adjust the lever in a good and right direction at an early stage, everyone has the chance of a really good life - also in the future. In the science fiction blockbuster "In Time" mankind has long since become immortal, at least in theory. People don't age anymore, they all look like 25. Since Blade Runner shows us the replicants in a human way, he asks whether it is fair for a few to benefit from the exploitation of many in terms of health. Loneliness and depression are major health problems of our time, to which answers are also sought in medicine. The pandemic is exacerbating these phenomena. The science fiction love story "Her" finds a technical answer that many will certainly find questionable. Teddy (played by Joaquin Phoenix) begins a love affair with the operating system of his cell phone. Samantha (voiced by Scarlett Johansson) is a Siri-like voice assistant who is always learning more about Teddy. He feels drawn to her, she understands him better than women he meets on his dates.
At some point, however, the conflict that we already know from “Blade Runner” comes to light again: Artificial intelligence develops its own feelings, the relationship with Teddy is no longer enough for her. Of course, technology cannot solve the problem of loneliness just like that, but we all noticed in lockdown that digital connections can also give us a positive feeling. "Her" thinks this idea further and asks: Would a relationship with a machine also give us a positive feeling? Could it counteract the isolation of society, or would it increase it? A question that could certainly come to us in the future and to which there will be no easy answer.

We live in a big simulation that runs on gigantic computers of a highly developed civilization. Some billionaires and researchers believe that. They even want to find errors in the matrix. Others think the simulation hypothesis isn’t true. What do you all mean? We provide some arguments for and against the thesis so that we can discuss it with you.
It's amazing how realistic these worlds are. Not quite 50 years ago, the first copies of the Atari slot machine classic Pong were pushed into the gambling halls. The video game consisted of just a few lines, a whirring square, and two counters for the score. Today, games like Red Dead Redemption 2 paint huge landscapes on our screens and televisions filled with forests, cities, and hundreds of characters. The graphics engines behind it simulate how sunlight penetrates human skin and is reflected. They cover tracts of land with realistic weather and ensure that horses' testicles shrink when temperatures drop.
If you believe developers , video games that can no longer be visually distinguished from reality, or at least look like big blockbusters, are no longer decades away, but only a few years. For the Tesla boss and SpaceX founder Elon Musk, this is exactly one of the strongest arguments for the fact that the world we live in is possibly just a kind of video game itself, a simulation that was created by a higher race or our descendants. Because if we almost manage to create virtual spaces that look like the real world, what are further developed beings capable of? We ourselves would therefore not be biological, but digital intellectual beings who beat our way through a hyper-realistic image of what may exist out there. The chance that we exist in reality, says Musk, is "one in several billion".
This theory, which at first seems completely crazy, does not come from Elon Musk himself, but from the Swedish philosopher Nick Bostrom. In 2003 he published Are You Living in a Computer Simulation? that made waves around the world. Bostrom hypothesized that a highly developed civilization like mankind could come to a point where it had enough computing power and energy to recreate the lives of billions of individuals in a computer program.
Science fiction authors like Robert Bradbury have shown what that might look like. In an essay he invented the matry brain . This is supposed to be a huge shell that - comparable to a Dyson sphere - completely encloses a star. As a result, the entire energy of the star could be used to operate gigantic computer systems that fan out around the shell like onion skins.
Before a civilization could create something like this, however, it would have to master numerous social and technological challenges. Nick Bostrom therefore postulated three possibilities for a civilization like mankind in his simulation hypothesis.
It dies out before it reaches a stage of development in which it grows beyond the current limits of thought, knowledge and action and thus becomes such a post-human civilization with outstanding technical abilities.
According to Bostrom, the probabilities for each of these possibilities are sometimes more, sometimes less balanced, depending on the current state of research . This means that the possibility that we live in a simulation would be less than 50 percent - but it would still be comparatively high. In theory, one civilization in the history of the cosmos with this technology and the will to create a simulation is enough to produce an almost infinite number of it. Eventually, a simulated civilization itself may eventually get to a point where it develops one or more simulations. These in turn could do the same and so on and so forth. From a purely mathematical point of view, the option that such simulations exist and that we live in one of them is therefore entirely plausible.
Waiting for evidence for or against a simulation takes too long for some. If there is one, then, like in a video game, there must also be ways of triggering errors with certain actions. These could then allow the program behind it to be exploited and things to be done that are not intended: We could use cheats to stop climate change, eliminate diseases or even simulate the world above it to leave. Possible means, could be upcoming experiments with particle accelerators or quantum computers. They have the potential to overload components of a simulation, if it is there, and exploit possible bugs.
But believing in a simulation, he says, is no crazier than believing that the world and everything in it was created by an Almighty God. “Why shouldn't it be true?”. Two tech billionaires from Silicon Valley are said to be more convinced.
